A Case of Submandibular Infantile Desmoid Fibromatosis: Role of Adjuvant Chemotherapy after Surgery

Abstract

|
Infantile fibromatosis, one of the fibrous tumors of infancy and childhood, is a fibroproliferative lesion characterized by aggressive local invasion and a high rate of local recurrence when incompletely excised, but the absence of histopathologic malignancy without tendency to metastasize. Head and neck infantile fibromatosis is uncommon in children, and the case is often misdiagnosed as different types of fibromatosis or fibrosarcoma. Wide surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment, but the role of adjuvant management has not been established because of the rarity of this tumor. We here report a case of submandibular infantile fibromatosis of desmoid type occurring in an 11-month-old boy, who was treated by surgical excision and adjuvant chemotherapy of vinblastine and methotrexate.
